About Us

The Sutherland Shire Water Polo Association is an association for all ages and levels of experience. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, we have a division for everyone! We play on Saturday Afternoons and Friday Nights (in Winter, Friday Nights only) across Sutherland, Caringbah and Engadine Leisure Centres.

A typical Summer season starts in mid-October and runs until the end of March (with a break from before Christmas until school starts back in NSW). A typical Winter season starts in May and runs until the end of August (with no breaks - we run right through the mid-year school holidays).

Structure

The Association is composed of six clubs: Arctic, Bundeena, Caringbah, Gunnamatta, Shire and Sutherland. Each club is independent in terms of training times and locations et cetera, but otherwise almost all other aspects of our clubs are common.

Games are held at Sutherland Leisure Centre, though occasionally due to events at the leisure centre we expand out to both Caringbah and Engadine leisure centers.

Our youngest age group are the Under 8s - from there we have sequential years going up to the Under 16s. Players 16 and up play in an 'Open' division, in which teams have no age limit or restriction.

No prior experience is necessary for playing.

Management

The Association is managed by a committee (see the committee page for more), comprising of representatives from each club and operations staff. At the AGM a Patron, President and Secretary (amongst other roles) are elected. Day to day operations are run by the Operations Staff, who manage areas such as general operations and logistics, asset management, refereeing and other assorted work areas.

A Typical Season

At the end of the season, we have Semi Finals (Summer only), and Grand Finals. In the semi finals, divisions are broken into groups of four teams ordered by their position in the point score. The format for playing is 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3.

The winning teams go through to play for Gold in the Grand Final, and the losing teams play for Bronze in the Grand Final. Teams ranked in a position after 4 still play in this format (that is, 5 vs 8, 6 vs 7), though no medals are awarded for these teams.

The Grand Final celebrations for Summer usually include a free sausage sizzle, chips, ice-cream and drink (or some combination thereof) for all players, as well as a medal presentation after each game. Winter celebrations are less formal, but still involve a sausage sizzle and medal presentations.
